Dance Tips

Regardless if you decide to come join one of our studios to enhance your dance skills, listed below are a few tips that can improve your dancing and make the experience memorable for both you and your partner.

Most of these suggestions are simple common sense items, but often dancers are thinking more about the lead, follow, steps and traffic on the floor than they are the basics of dance.  Remember men, it is your job to showcase the lady - every effort must be made to do so.  Ladies, you are the picture in the frame.

Do's and Don'ts on the Dance Floor

For the Ladies

For the Men

Respond to your partners lead.  Try not to anticipate your partners next step.   Dance with several partners at a dance.
Be confident.  Confidence comes with practice and knowledge of the dance. Try not to dance with only one partner or keep your partner from dancing with others.
Dancing is an extension of walking and natural body movement.  Try not to present yourself  in an unnatural manner. Lead your partner through the crowd and trying not to collide with other couples on the floor.
Try to stay focused on your partner, regardless of their level of dance.  Converse with other couples after you have left the dance floor. Follow line of dance.
Do not dance for the benefit of yourself or onlookers, concentrate on your partner. Escort your partner back to her seat or table, do not abandon her on the floor.
Dance with everyone who asks, do not make your decision because they are not at your level. Do not make excuses for your dancing, improve it.
Do not show off at the expense of your partner.

For both Men and Women

Do not chew gum.  It gives the impression that you are not interested in dancing.
Visit with friends off the dance floor.
If you are dancing with a beginner, move to the center of the floor.  Avoid the advanced dancers moving around the outside.
Have fun.  Enjoy the moment, remember you will not always be at the top of your form.  If you miss a step - keep going.
